And by that I mean, it's October 1 and getting close to Halloween. Sure Xmas is nice and all, everyone one loves getting presents. And Thanksgiving is a perfectly fine holiday for stuffing oneself with turkey (the bird, not the country), settling in to watch some Sportsball with friends and family (this even applies if, like me, you are not a fan of Sportsball). But Halloween, ah to me Halloween is the best.
Skulls, bats and pumpkins everywhere. Television showing a continuous barrage of scary movies for the month. Ghosts and ghouls becoming the major themes of the season. I love every minute of it. I am as much of a sucker for pretty Xmas lights as anyone, but I do love to see me some black cats and jack o'lanterns in windows. If Halloween needed a big fat guy to act as a mascot for it, ala Santa Claus for Xmans, I would be that guy.
My biggest disappointment is that it has become such a holiday fraught with needless worry. People worry about poisoned candy. They worry about the safety of their tots going trick or treating. The more religious sorts worry that they are glorifying the devil and so on and so forth. As a result, some of us see very few little ghosts and goblins for the Holiday. Since I moved into my current apartment, I haven't had more than three or four visitors on any given Halloween night. And one of those is usually my little great nephew, who lives in the same complex. But those lucky few who DO show up get full sized candy bars.
And Halloween Candy...I understand parents wanting to be cautious, because people are weirdos. But do keep in mind that they only known cases of poisoned halloween candy ever found were targetting specific kids and came from someone in the home, not from strangers. So yea, be careful, but don't let it dissuade you from letting your little one have some October 31 fun.
Of course an ADDITIONAL perk of this wonderful time of year is that it's also "Pumpkin Flavored Everything" season and I have no shame in enjoying my pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pie milkshakes, pumpkin roll, pumpkin granola bars....okay, I will shut up before I sound like a gourd based version of Bubba from Forrest Gump.
So have a wonderful October all, I am getting geared up for my favorite time of year.
